TRAIN DRIVERS' representatives from every depot in Manchester are meeting, in a weekly liaison committee, to organisation of and REDMOND O'NEILL asked the members of the liaison committee their views on the progress of the dispute.

Peter Gunn (secretary Manchester No1 branch ASLEF)

We' ve pot to overcome the barrage of press distorLIOILS GOOU We're fighting against the Rail Board's Icmpl to get rid of the eight-hour day and along with it, 4,000 jobs.

Look around here.

You don't see many young people here. That's because they've chopped jobs since the war. Right now there are 30,000 unfilled vacancies on BR and still they re recruiting.

Since I started this job l've been made redundant and shifted right around the depot to depol. more than you've had hot dinners.

H Newell (chairperson of Manchester LDC)

I suspect that mie govern ment has provoked this dispulc try ASLEF and shut down BULC railways. Unfortunately when we take acit's the public that push forward the the struggle in this area. DUNCAN EDWARDS support from the NUR OTIVCTS hut yet EDE guards have not taken aclon. All the came there is a lot of support from the LCIE -OCTALINE ETHOC the NUR because they also work shifts and know what's involved.

The BR Board is trying to split the unions by .ending Sunday working.

Sidney Weighell is letting them get away with it. He makes tine speeches about the 35-hour week and banning overtime at the TUC but when it to defending his members, where is he?

Guards have to work on the wages they get. they don't work Sundays or their rest days, guards come out with around E50 a week.

Bob Barrows (chairperson Newton Heath ASLEF) If you are members of the engineering union, you ought to get Terry Dufty to keep his mouth about this dispute. When he mouths U aTEASsO idea is to convince people that speaks for all engineers.

In fact, Duffy is like a lot of his colleagues — he's ust going for a seat in the Houst of Lords would ask AUEW members to protest against interference in our Gunn This dispute is not likely to be settled by compulsory arbitration. Our protracted strug. gle in 1955 went to arbitration and the result was that we ended up with the same as BR's original offer.

The Board has had no scruples in the past about ignoring recommendaLOIL- arbitration While we are fighting we want all the support we can get from the Labour Party and the unions. We want to get the truth across to the public.

This is a strike to defend jobs, to defend livins standards and to defenc militant Nauc UmOnsu That's why a victory for us will oe a victory tor al workers. ownership are WWBPR TAP ATTE
