SMASH THE 40/0 ON 19 September, over a quarter of a million US workers marched on Washington to reaffirm the solidarity of movement and to protest President Reagan's budget cuts and tax policies.

The 'Solidarity Day' demonstration, the same day workers marched in Birmingham, was the first time in the history of the AFL-CIO (the US equivalent to the TUC) that it had ever called mass national demonstration.
